Both in frequency and severity, intimate partner violence is primarily, but not exclusively, a crime committed by men against their female partners. Women experience more violence, are more likely to be injured by the violence, and also are more likely to be the victims of homicide at the hands of their intimate partners. In 2001, 85 percent of the victims of intimate partner violence were women, while men accounted for approximately 15 percent of the intimate partner violence victims.

Bureau of Justice Statistics Crime Data Brief, Intimate Partner Violence, 1993-2001, February 2003.

On average, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in this country every day. In 2000, 1,247 women were killed by an intimate partner, and 440 men were killed by an intimate partner.
