Tribal Justice Probation System Reform: Experiences in Tribal Justice Communities that Improve Youth Outcomes

SESSION INFO

Monday, March 11, 2019
1:45 pm - 2:45 pm
Session Type: Workshop

This workshop is provided as part of a continued effort on the part of the Robert F. Kennedy National Resource Center for Juvenile Justice to advance juvenile justice reform and support federal, state, and local leaders. Over the past year the Resource Center has partnered with the APPA to support probation system reform in tribal communities (as well as other state and local jurisdictions) in an effort to enhance probation department performance. In tribal justice communities and probation departments, a culture of doing things “the way we’ve always done them” often permeates daily operations, and this culture undermines changes that incorporate evidence-based practices and can bring about more effective programs and services. There has typically been little time or effort to reflect on important questions about practices and policies that impact youth. How well are our programs working? Are we achieving effective system performance and the desired youth outcomes? This training session will try to provide some perspective and guidance. Included in this workshop will be highlights from the new Tribal Justice Community Probation System Guidebook, which offers future opportunities for enhancement of tribal youth outcomes across the country. We welcome and encourage the participation of all relevant probation system stakeholders.
