Fathers Matter: How Probation Officers Help Fathers Define Their Roles in the Lives of Their Children

SESSION INFO

Monday, August 19, 2019
1:15 PM - 2:15 PM
Session Type: Workshop

President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper initiative inspired the San Francisco Adult Probation Department to develop programs and services aimed at improving outcomes of young men starting at the family system. Our Fathers Matter program represents a step toward ending inter-generational criminality. This workshop will provide an overview of how this 14-week program and curriculum were developed. The clients in the program will journey through various topics facilitated by probation officers. Many participants have very compelling stories about their own personal struggles being fatherless and/or dealing with separation from their children. They both share their personal experiences and learn how to navigate the most challenging situations in constructive ways. The workshop will focus on program topics that include Family History, What It Means to Be a Man, Working with Mom, and Co-Parenting. The presenters will demonstrate how clients are taught goal-setting, effective communication, and positive relationship skills. You are urged to come learn about the positive steps we have made through this endeavor!
