Building Community HOPE and Trust Together: A Cultural Strategy

SESSION INFO

Tuesday, July 31, 2018
11:15 AM - 12:45 PM
Session Type: Workshop

This workshop will explore the dynamics of HOPE, as adopted and shared with youth-serving agencies and schools by the Juvenile Justice Center in the County of Yuma, Arizona. This is a strategic cultural framework that rallies an entire community around a common set of evidence-based principles and practices that support the success of all youth, without exception. Rather than introducing a new program on top of other programs, Yuma County’s cultural impact model focuses on three major principles that should be guaranteed to all youth: (1) There should be shared understanding that adults believe in all youth; (2) all young people should have the support and trust of caring adults in their lives; and (3) all youth should learn the power of mental time travel–the ability to forecast, plan, and commit to their future goals. The presenters will give an overview of research in this area as well as the rationale, implementation, and effects of this initiative.
