Measuring Offender Opinions on Probation and Supervised Release

SESSION INFO

Monday, July 30, 2018
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Session Type: Workshop

This workshop will describe the research design and findings of a survey of U.S. probationers/releasees in two North Carolina districts. The survey was administered online and was designed to accurately elicit and measure offender opinions of supervision, such as how well they thought officers utilized active listening and feedback, effective use of authority, problem solving, applying the cognitive model, effective reinforcement, effective use of disapproval, and use of effective punishments, and whether, when applicable, they ensured treatment services were provided. Surveys were conducted at two points in time--within the first 60 days of supervision, and again six months later. Workshop participants are assumed to have a basic knowledge of elements that constitute a professional PO/client relationship. The presenters will discuss the survey results and the application of this information to the PO/client relationship. Challenges and issues related to conducting survey research with probationers will be discussed, and participants will receive guidance on how agencies can develop research partnerships with universities.
