Addressing Infrastructural Needs in Tribal Probation: An Overview of the Tribal Probation Academy

SESSION INFO

Monday, July 30, 2018
11:30 AM - 12:30 PM
Session Type: Workshop

Tribal probation officers face challenges not typically found in the greater community corrections field, such as large caseload sizes combined with vast geographical areas to cover, dual-supervision caseloads of adults and juveniles, limited or no access to assessment tools, and inadequate office space and equipment. The pressure of working without infrastructure and support is overwhelming to new officers, some of whom do not have education and experience commensurate with the demands of their jobs, and this can result in high turnover and resultant instability in the delivery of supervision services. Over the past decade, APPA has worked with tribes to help address these infrastructural issues. With support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, APPA and its core partners are hosting a Tribal Probation Academy. The goal of this workshop is to highlight the key components and objectives of the Academy to broaden support for it.
