Thinking Outside of the Box: Developing and Accessing Tribal Programs and Resources to Support Reentry

SESSION INFO

Tuesday, March 12, 2019
11:15 am - 12:15 pm
Session Type: Workshop

Each jurisdiction has its own challenges in meeting the needs of those being released from incarceration, but each also has resources that can support such efforts. Both are definitely true of tribal communities. This interesting session will introduce participants to the demand for effective reentry programs in tribal communities and to various reentry programs that have been developed in response. Special attention will be paid to highlighting creative approaches that some tribes have taken to support their members during the difficult process of rebuilding their lives after release—and how resources unique to tribal communities may provide invaluable support to those who are undergoing this process. Participants will also learn about the unique legal challenges faced by justice system personnel and individuals during the reintegration process in tribal communities.
