The Black Hole: The Effects of Trauma and Substance Abuse on Adolescent Development

The term “black hole” elicits a sense of bottomless darkness that nothing escapes. Imagine experiencing events and living with emotions that leave you with a sense of being in a black hole. For a portion of our juvenile population, this is not imagination gone wild. Instead, it is an accurate way of conveying their daily struggle to survive. Participants in this session will learn how real-life events and emotions can adversely affect adolescent development and potentially lead to risky behaviors such as of substance use/abuse and delinquency. Hopefully, we can provide each participant with a deeper understanding of how trauma impacts justice-involved youth. Without insight in this area, professionals in the criminal justice field will be less able to respond appropriately when they encounter and work with such damaged individuals.
