High on our Highways-The Challenge of Drug Impaired Driving and Community Supervision

SESSION INFO

Monday, March 11, 2019
1:45 pm - 2:45 pm
Session Type: Workshop

In 2016, 44% of the fatally injured drivers with a known test result tested positive for drugs--a higher percentage than those who tested positive for alcohol. The growing number of states that have legalized recreational marijuana and the prevalent abuse of prescription drugs have created an increased threat to our roadways. Given that over two thirds of our probation population is drug- and/or alcohol-involved, probation officers need to understand the challenge we face in regard to drugged drivers. This interactive presentation will provide the audience information on the scope of our drugged driving problem using an overview of drug-impaired driving data, research, and policy developments. Also covered will be the use of assessment tools to determine risk and, importantly, the implementation of practical evidence-based supervision strategies that can address the behaviors of drug- and polysubstance-impaired drivers.
