Assess to Grow: How to Value Officer Skill Competencies Within Your Correctional Organization

This workshop will provide an overview of a new quality assurance process within the Virginia Department of Corrections that promotes the use of core correctional practices and develops a roadmap for professional development for officers. The Community Operational Assessment has a set of skill competencies that officers are expected to utilize in daily casework and that are reviewed for fidelity. In addition, the presenters will identify overall areas of success and areas of need in the probation district. They will also help hone the attendees’ skills in this area by reviewing implementation strategies that are utilized to ensure consistent scoring and feedback from assessment results.

SESSION PRESENTERS
Antonia Cerino
Deputy Chief Probation and Parole Officer, VA Department of Corrections
Antonia "Toni" Cerino is a Deputy Chief in the City of Chesapeake, Virginia. She began her employment with the Virginia Department of Corrections in 2005 and has also held the positions of Probation Officer and Senior PO. She is a 2002 graduate of Old Dominion University with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology.
Denise Hayes
EBP Operations Administrator, VA Department of Corrections
Denise Hayes is an EBP Manager for the Virginia Department of Corrections. She began her career with the VADOC in 1999 as a Probation Officer and was later promoted to Senior PO and Deputy Chief. Ms. Hayes is a graduate of the University of Virginia with a BA in Sociology. Tecora Johnson is a Deputy Chief for the Virginia Department of Corrections. She began her career with VADOC in 2007 as a Probation Officer and was later promoted to Senior PO, EBP Manager, and Regional Manager. She is a graduate of Longwood University with a Bachelor’s in Social Work and a Master’s degree in Sociology. She is also a graduate of Liberty University with a Master’s degree in Professional Counseling.

Shirley Stanley
Regional Manager, VA Department of Corrections
Shirley Stanley is a Regional Manager with the Virginia Department of Corrections. She has held various leadership and training positions within the VADOC. Ms. Stanley received a BS in Criminal Justice and a MS degree in Counseling from the Virginia Commonwealth University.
