SESSION INFO

Sunday, March 10, 2019
8:00 am - 12:00 pm
Session Type: Intensive

This workshop will share the useful guidance offered by the American Probation and Parole Association, the International Community Corrections Association, and the Pretrial Justice Institute in their publication, Preventing and Responding to Corrections-Based Sexual Abuse: A Guide for Community Corrections Professionals. The presenters will discuss how to manage the day to day issues often experienced when protecting the safety of special populations, to include the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) community. This includes addressing various daily supervision and management needs that may arise when working with LGBTI people residing within residential facilities. Attention will be given to the standards of the Community Confinement Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), which can pose significant challenges for community residential facilities such as group homes, halfway houses, community-based pre-release centers, and work release centers. As the workshop moves to close, the presenters will speak to the difficulties that victims/survivors face when reentering the community. Workshop participants will definitely benefit from the insights and strategies provided.
