Description: The Commissioner of Corrections has responsibility for setting conditions of supervised release for adults and has delegated this responsibility to the Hearings & Release Unit. Probation, parole and supervised release services are provided by the state and counties in different manners. Counties participating in the state Community Corrections Act (one-third of the 87 counties) provide probation, parole and supervised release services to both adults and juveniles. In the remaining counties, adult felony probation, parole and supervised release services are provided by the state, while juvenile probation and parole services and adult misdemeanant services are provided by county personnel or through contracts with the state. Description: The Maryland Parole Commission is responsible for granting parole, reviewing requests for warrants for alleged parole violation, recommending executive clemency requests to the Governor, evaluating parolees' performance when on parole and ensuring the victims of crime receive an opportunity for input during the parole process. The Maryland Division of Parole and Probation supervises felony and misdemeanant (i.e., ensures compliance with special conditions, conducts drug tests of offenders, refers offenders to drug treatment and other services) adult parolees and probationers and monitors individuals convicted of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) and Driving Under the Influence (DUI). In addition, the Division offers and delivers victim services, collects restitution and fees from offenders; prepares pre-sentence and pre-parole investigations and numerous other reports for the Judiciary and the Maryland Parole Commission. Description: The Massachusetts Parole Board is an agency within the Executive Office of Public Safety authorized to grant paroles, supervise the parolee, and make recommendations to the Governor in regard to pardons and commutations. Annually, the agency conducts over 10,000 face-to-face parole release hearings, supervises over 8,000 parolees, provides notice and assistance to thousands of victims and provides reentry services to nearly 700 state offenders leaving custody with no post release supervision.

Description: In 2003, the Massachusetts Trial Court, under the general superintendence of the Supreme Judicial Court, is still made up of the seven departments, each with its own administrative office, the central Administrative Office (consisting itself of eight departments), the Office of the Jury Commissioner and the Office of the Commissioner of Probation. There are three hundred sixty-two authorized judicial positions in the system. Trial judges sit in more than one hundred thirty locations across the state. The Trial Court employs more than 7,000 people. It is an institution that has a short recent history but has the benefit of the illustrious traditions and history that each of its constituent departments and courts brought to it in 1978.
