The Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA) supports the elimination, reduction, and prevention of sexual assault and rape within corrections systems, and it applies to Federal, State, and local prisons, jails, police lock-ups, private facilities, and community settings. Although there has been a concerted effort to educate correctional facility personnel as to their increased accountability and responsibilities under PREA, additional guidance for community corrections professionals is needed. Under a cooperative agreement with the Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice, The Council of State Governments/American Probation & Parole Association is collaborating with the International Community Corrections Association and the Pretrial Services Resource Center to develop a guidebook to assist front-line community corrections staff and line supervisors in understanding and complying with the provisions of PREA. This guidebook will be developed with an aim to heighten sensitivity among community corrections line supervisors and line staff to sexual assault issues in the context of community corrections and will include specific, step-by-step guidance on working with individual clients who may be victims of sexual assault.
