A topic possibly getting the least attention in criminal justice today is corrections services delivered in rural settings. Rural settings with scarce resources, isolation and transportation difficulties are rarely the subject of evaluation or research design. Even some rural agencies believe evidence based practice works or has value only in larger urban settings. However, rural corrections practice can successfully move operations into the evidence-based practice arena with some advantages over larger urban agencies. This presentation provides participants definition of the obstacles in rural settings as well as the advantages of moving into EBP, and provides a pathway for galvanizing resources, implementing EBP on a smaller scale, and utilizing partnerships to access grant funding and shore up service needs.
