Project Safe
Neighborhoods: APPA has been awarded a grant by the U. S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, in conjunction with Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) to involve probation and parole professionals in the Project Safe Neighborhoods effort. The first step is to ascertain current practices among probation and parole organizations throughout the nation in the prevention of offenders on supervision from possessing and using guns, and in searching for and seizing guns held illegally (Possession or Receipt of a Firearm or Ammunition by a Prohibited Person, 18 U.S.C. § 922(g) & (n); see: www.atf.gov). APPA will develop and offer relevant technical assistance and training for probation and parole professionals, and allied agencies, and work collaboratively with other agencies to promote proactive enforcement of existing gun law restrictions which may include referral of dangerous offenders to United States Attorneys for federal prosecution. Project Safe Neighborhoods is a nationwide commitment to reduce gun crime in America by networking existing local programs that target gun crime and providing those programs with additional tools necessary to be successful. The Bush Administration has committed over $1 billion to this effort over Fiscal Years 2001-2004. This funding is being used to hire new federal and state prosecutors, support investigators, provide training, distribute gun lock safety kits, deter juvenile gun crime, and develop and promote community outreach efforts as well as to support other gun crime reduction strategies. The goal is to create safer neighborhoods by reducing gun crime and sustaining the reduction.
