As the women’s movement gained
force in the 1970s attention began to be focused on domestic violence as a
social and justice system problem. Initially emphasis was placed on arrest
and prosecution of offenders, but increasingly, offenders are being
supervised in community corrections. In the 1980s some community corrections
agencies began developing protocols for supervising domestic violence
offenders, but others have not yet recognized the special challenges these
offenders present. This presentation will discuss the prevalence, dynamics,
and myths of domestic violence; the characteristics, treatment, and
strategies for supervision of offenders; and victim issues.
