Women represent an increasing proportion of offenders under
community corrections supervision. Women probationers increased from 18
percent in 1990 to 23 percent in 2003; women parolees increased from 8
percent to 13 percent during the same time period. Concurrent to the
increasing number of women offenders in community corrections, research is
producing information about issues affecting women offenders – issues that
can significantly influence women’s potential for success while under the
jurisdiction of community corrections. This presentation will provide
corrections administrators, managers, supervisors, and line staff with
information on what has been learned about gender responsiveness for women
offenders and best methods for applying that information to the women on
community corrections supervision.
