Salt Lake City to Host National Conference on Community Corrections

The American Probation and Parole Association’s Winter Training Institute will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah, January 5-8, 2002, at The Grand America Hotel.
Practitioners and researchers from the United States and Canada will make presentations regarding promising practices and programs available to community justice professionals. A wide variety of workshops will be offered including re-entry/parole, rural issues, community and restorative justice, offender supervision, sex offender management, and juvenile justice.
A resource expo will feature exhibitors where you can test and compare the latest products, services and technologies. Leading suppliers of drug testing products, electronic monitoring equipment, information management systems, training programs and many more valuable services will be on hand.
Featured sessions will be held in the Grand Ballroom A&D, Main Level, The Grand American Hotel.
From the Salt Lake City School District, Lori Hargraves, “Speak Your
Peace”, an improvisational teen theatre group will perform at the Opening Session on Sunday, January 5, at 7:00pm. This group will portray real life situations critical in the everyday life such as family problems, racial and religious biases, peer relationships, self-esteem, substance abuse, depression and suicide.
Examining White Privilege – Arthur H. Woodward, Jr., SOULcial Worker and James F. Wuelfng, The New England Center on Monday, January 6, at 8:30am will examine the phenomenon known as “white privilege.” Experience and intimate and honest portrayal of the different experience had by whites and people of color in our society.
Hopefulness and Hopelessness Can Change Lives – Even Yours Dr. Mario Paparozzi, College of New Jersey, Department of Law and Justice, will speak at the closing session on Wednesday, January 7, at 9:45a.m. Dr. Paparozzi began his career in criminal justice in 1972. He recently decided he could do more for the professional advancement of community corrections by cutting short his six-year appointment with the New Jersey State Parole Board and returned to the College of New Jersey.
Host agencies for APPA’s 2002 Winter Training Institute include the Utah Correctional Association and the Utah Administrative Office of the Courts.
