Salt Lake City to Host National Conference on Community Corrections


NOTE: All sessions are open to the news media with a media pass. Complimentary on-site passes will be available for the media each day at the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA) Institute Registration Booth at The Grand America Hotel in the Grand Ballroom Reception area, Main Level.

WHO: The American Probation and Parole Association’s 2003 Winter Training Institute is designed to bring together professionals from such fields as adult and juvenile probation, parole, restitution 
management, residential programs, treatment, and the judicial system. Representing over 35,000, APPA is an international non-profit organization committed to realistic and effective probation, parole, and community-based correctional programming.

  • Media Strategies for Government Organizations – The marriage of the media and government organizations is complicated. Constitutional issues, basic conflicts and the fundamentals of developing a successful media relation for government organizations will be discussed.   • Clandestine Methamphetamine Labs – See meth lab paraphernalia and view the setup of a mock meth lab. How to identify components of a meth lab, chemicals, and other related safety issues. Learn what to do or who to contact if you suspect a meth lab or happen upon one in your area. Presenters: Lt. Jim Keith, Bureau Chief, In Service Training, State Police Academy and T.J.   • The Necessity of Efficient Management During Tight Budget Times – Explore the effects that severe financial constraints have on the working and decision making of parole boards, and the corresponding responses from the field. Presenters: Mike Chabries, Executive Director, Utah Department of Corrections, and Mike Sibbett, Chairman, Utah State Board of Pardons and Parole.   • Program Enhancement Process (PEP): Ensuring Quality in Juvenile Justice Programs – The Utah Division of Youth Corrections developed PEP to assist in answering questions about program effectiveness. Examples of models will be provided and an update about the progress will be given.   • Spotlight on the Salt Lake City Drug Court – This drug court was established as part of an ongoing effort to combat the rising number of drug related crimes. Learn about the key aspects of drug courts as well as the treatment models utilized by the Salt Lake City Drug Court Treatment staff. Presenters: Honorable Dennis M.   • Clarification, Reconciliation, Reunification of Families and Communities Involved in Sexual Abuse – See how a multi-disciplinary, multi-agency committee in Utah has researched and developed a comprehensive intervention process.   • Internet Crimes Against Children: What are the Problems? What are the Solutions? – This presentation will focus on the dangerous side of the Internet: How a predator tracks down children in a chat room, undercover operations, video of child victims, actual chat that results in an arrest, solutions and how to safeguard children.
