Juvenile and Adult Probation
The Nebraska Probation System
within the State Judicial Branch administers probation through 15 district
offices, 34 satellite offices, and 6 intensive supervision probation regions.
These probation officers carry a mixed caseload of adult and juvenile
probationers.
These adult and juvenile
probation officers do not carry a firearm. They are not classified as peace
officers but do have the power to arrest.
There is an agency policy that
prohibits officers from carrying a firearm.
At the time of the survey, it
was not under consideration to allow juvenile probation officers to carry a
firearm.
In addition, the state has:
5 Districts that have SASS
(Specialized Substance Abuse Supervision) offices
3 Drug Courts
1 Problem Solving Court
1 Work Ethic Camp - with two case managers
There are no private companies
providing juvenile supervision services.
Juvenile Parole
The Department of Health and Human
Services, Office of Juvenile Services is administered by the Executive
Branch of state government. Juvenile Service Workers provide supervision
and treatment services to juvenile offenders that are conditionally
released from Youth Rehabilitation and Treatment
Centers to the community. Also this same
group of workers provides supervision and treatment to juveniles
committed directly to the Office of Juvenile Services for placement in
the community. Juvenile Service Officers are located in five service
areas across the state.
Juvenile Service Officers do not carry a
firearm and are not classified as peace officers. They do have the power
to take juveniles into custody.
An administrative policy does not permit
Juvenile Service Officers to carry a firearm.
Carrying a firearm has never been a
consideration.
The Office of Juvenile Services contracts
with various private organizations to provide supervision and treatment
services to juvenile offenders. None of these contracted organizations
carry firearms.
Adult Parole
Within the Executive Branch of state government, the
Nebraska Department of Corrections, Adult Parole Administration oversees adult
parole.
Adult parole officers do not carry a firearm. They
are not classified as peace officers, but do have the power to arrest.
There is a Department Administrative Regulation
issued by the Director of Corrections that prohibits officers from carrying a
firearm.
At the time of the survey, it was not under
consideration to allow the officers to carry a firearm.
There are no private companies providing adult parole
supervision.
