WRAP is now used in justice systems across the country. WRAP for Workplace Wellness and WRAP for Reentry, an evidenced based practice (EBP) is recognized as an innovative program shown to improve behavior, adverse trauma responses, mental health outcomes, reentry outcomes and prevent crisis. This workshop presentation will provide an overview of WRAP, including how developing a personalized wellness plan helps individuals to identify simple and safe wellness tools to create action plans for everyday life to maintain wellness, create a supportive workplace, reduce recidivism, and improve quality of life. The presentation will describe how to utilize this EBP to improve probation and parole outcomes through a plan centered on personal responsibility and action planning. It will demonstrate how WRAP can be used as a preventive strategy and a proactive way to address life challenges such as addiction, mental illness, veteran service-related experiences, relationship difficulties and improve natural support systems.

SESSION PRESENTERS

Lynn Patrone
Executive Director, Wellness Recovery Action Plan Inc.


Lynn Miller is the Executive Director for the Wellness Recovery Action Plan, (WRAP,) Inc. a national non-profit agency. WRAP Inc. is the Intellectual Property owner of the evidence-based curricula of WRAP, including 2 levels of certification training. WRAP has been instrumental in transforming the lives of individuals around the world. Lynn began her work with WRAP 20 years ago and has led WRAP initiatives in the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Department of Health & Human Services and consults with state’s correctional and community correctional systems. Lynn’s career spans over 2 decades in training and administration. Lynn was appointed as the Department of Correction’s Mental Health Advocate providing consultation to Pennsylvania’s state prisons. Lynn administered programs overseeing over 800 certified peer specialists and 200 WRAP facilitators, including staff. Lynn is a certified peer specialist and family member and proudly contributes WRAP to her ability to not only maintain her personal recovery journey but as the roadmap to fulfilling her career goals and personal goals of ensuring that people worldwide continue to benefit from WRAP. Lynn’s passion continues to be rooted in implementing innovation in justice services to reduce violence, reduce recidivism and help system leaders maintain safe prisons and communities.


James Varland
Division Manager, IA Dept of Corrections


James D. Varland, MA, LMHC, LMFT, SOTPII: Jim is an Iowa Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Marriage and Family Therapist, as well as a Sex Offender Treatment Provider Level II. He has extensive training in EMDR, Solutions Focused Therapy, and assessing and treating clients with sexual offenses. Jim has been with the Iowa Department of Corrections since 2001 serving in both institutional and community based corrections. Jim has also worked in hospitals, private practices, family service agencies, and has been an adjunct instructor for three difference colleges. He also served as Chair on the Iowa Board for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (IBTSA). He is currently a Division Manager for the 2nd District, Iowa Department of Corrections and oversees all treatment programming and staff wellness in the district. Jim is also an Advanced Level Facilitator for the Wellness Recovery Action Plan.
