Mindfulness has been scientifically proven to reduce stress, anxiety and generally improve mental health as well as physical health benefits. In this field that is often defined as being high stress and physically taxing, this talk will address how a basic incorporation of mindfulness in one’s day can assist in benefitting us all. In addition to the personal benefits, we will discuss how mindfulness can benefit certain populations we may serve as well as the communities we work toward bettering. We will look at scientific research that backs this practice in action as well as teach how to incorporate these practices into even the busiest of lives.

SESSION PRESENTERS
Jonathan Newton
Juvenile Custody Services Specialist, Multnomah County Community Justice
Jonathan Newton has worked in the human services field since his early working days, including at detox recovery centers and case management with psychiatric patients. Primarily he has worked with incarcerated juveniles, both pre-adjudicated and post-adjudicated. Hoping to further understand his clients better and become more equipped to address their needs he went back to school to get his Masters in Social Work. He currently works in Portland, OR at the Multnomah County Juvenile Detention Center where he works with challenging youth with severe criminal charges and a variety of personal challenges. In his personal time he keeps an active meditation practice which enriches his life which he shares with his wife, six year old daughter and very strange puppy.
