Resisting the Reflexes of Management: Compliance versus Adherence

SESSION INFO

Wednesday, March 4, 2026
8:00 AM - 9:00 AM
Session Type: Workshop

Many managers are expected and trained to manage tasks, enforce rules, and ensure compliance. But real management in probation, parole, and pretrial work requires something more and well beyond these traditional and technical tasks. This session explores the difference between managing for compliance and leading for meaningful results. Participants will learn when a situation calls for technical fixes and when it requires adaptive leadership and an appreciative mindset. We will examine how to diagnose root problems instead of reacting to surface symptoms, and how organizational culture and psychological safety shape our ultimate impact on others. The session will explore resistance to change, staff engagement and buy-in, the difference between climate and culture, and why vision is imperative. Participants will reflect on the shift from fighting against what is wrong to building toward what is right. This conversation is designed to spark insight, strengthen critical thinking, and inspire hope about the kind of impact each of us can have, regardless of title or position. We will ultimately challenge the reflexes of management and build the foundation for real success in a management role.
