Co-designing built environment projects with youth on probation can address issues like recidivism, promote positive behavior, reduce stress, and foster community connections. This workshop will focus on co-designing community safety and working with young people on probation on co-creating and implementing built environment projects. Attendees will learn the concept of co-design, the various stages of implementing a place-based project, and cultivating deep community engagement.

James Brodick
Chief Strategic Growth Officer, Center for Justice Innovation
James Brodick is the Chief Strategic Growth Officer and a member of the Executive Team, James brings our community safety vision and strategies nationwide, helping cities, counties, and states learn from our experience and plant seeds of justice all across America. James has helped introduce numerous new programs that move the Center’s work “upstream,” emphasizing community empowerment, economic development, crime prevention and other approaches that build safety and reduce the need for justice system involvement.
Danielle Brutus
Project Director, Capacity Building, Neighborhood Safety Initiatives, Center for Justice Innovation
Danielle Brutus, MSW/MA, is a dynamic leader in community engagement, social justice, and public safety with over eight years of experience in capacity building, nonprofit leadership, and criminal justice reform. She currently serves as Project Director at Neighborhood Safety Initiatives at the Center for Justice Innovation, where she designs and leads training programs that strengthen resident leadership, community organizing, and placekeeping initiatives across New York City.
Layman Lee
Senior Director, Neighborhood Safety Initiatives, Center for Justice Innovation
Layman Lee is a seasoned project director and community-based designer with over 15 years of experience leading innovative, resident-driven public space and safety initiatives in New York City. Currently serving as Senior Project Director at the Center for Justice Innovation’s Neighborhood Safety Initiative, Layman oversees strategic programs that activate public spaces, support public housing residents, and promote equity through collaborative design, engagement, and placekeeping.
Jose Torres
Project Director, Neighborhood Initiatives & Logistics, Neighborhood Safety Initiatives, Center for Justice Innovation
Jose Torres is an experienced community development and policy professional with a strong background in public service, economic development, and urban planning. He currently serves as a Project Director at Neighborhood Safety Initiatives at the Center for Justice Innovation, where he leads strategic community engagement and direct programmatic interventions aimed at creating more equitable housing opportunities.
