Not All Wounds are Visible: Reducing Suicide among Colleagues and People on your Caseload

Suicide is a primary cause of death among current and retired corrections professionals. It is a leading cause of death among those under supervision also. This workshop will discuss and practice developing the skill to assist colleagues or people on your caseload considering suicide to make different choices. Learning simple engagement skills developed by suicide prevention professionals, participants will be able to assist and redirect those contemplating suicide to other options. Data indicates that those trained in these simple skills greatly reduce the % of suicides of those they have interacted with. Session will also provide national helpline resources.

SESSION PRESENTERS
Denise Pena
Director, Multnomah County Community Justice
Director Multnomah County Department of Community Justice, Portland, Oregon. Denise has over 25 years experience working in the criminal justice field providing leadership for the wide range of services to clients, their families and crime victims. Prior to her appointment to the Director role in May 2024, she was the Deputy Director for DCJ. As deputy director, she supported the department’s Research and Planning Team, contracting, budgeting, facilities, victim and survivor services and other department-wide efforts to include leading the department through a gap analysis in 2024. She also helped to launch a statewide association of corrections providers to better share information and expertise and was pivotal in Multnomah County being selected by “Code for America” to help create a website for victims to better access information about their cases. APPA recognized her work presenting her with the Joe Kegans Award for Victim Services in Probation and Parole.
David M. Ryan
Director, Westchester County DV High Risk Team
David Ryan served as Chief of Police in the Town of Pound Ridge for 23+ years, retiring on August 12, 2022 after a 40-year law enforcement career. Chief Ryan is a nationally recognized subject matter expert in the fields of Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking. He Is the retired Director of Multnomah County Department of Community Justice. He has worked in juvenile and adult institutions, run a Residential Center, served as counselor, Probation& Parole Officer, Supervisor, and as a County and State Director of Probation and Parole in Oregon. He Currently serves of the APPA Board of Directors. He is Past Treasurer and Past President of the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA). Recipient of the APPA Walter Dunbar award for contributions to the field, Coordinator of the 2nd World Congress on Probation.
