At the Intersection of Probation and Jails: Lessons from the Safety and Justice Challenge Probation Practice to Reduce Jail Populations Network

SESSION INFO

Wednesday, August 30, 2023
8:00 AM - 9:00 AM
Session Type: Workshop

Since probation violations are a significant contributor to jail populations in many jurisdictions and jail stays can have adverse effects on people serving probation, this workshop will focus on the intersection between probation and jails, specifically strategies to reduce jail use for people on probation and inequities associated with it. This workshop builds on the work of the MacArthur Foundation-funded Safety and Justice Challenge Probation Practice to Reduce Jail Populations Network which is an 18-month network bringing together seven probation sites to conduct peer-learning on this issue. The Urban Institute team will provide an overview of this issue area and local practitioner partners will present on challenges faced and successes achieved as they have worked to limit jail use for people on probation.
