What reduces resistance and increases the chance of positive outcomes in community corrections? Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-based communication style that has been shown to have a dramatic effect on outcomes leading to increased offender compliance, lower recidivism, less work and stress for the supervising officer, and safer communities. This training provides practical skills for engaging people in the process of change and guiding them to find solutions.

Mr. Omar Gamez
Probation Officer, Washington State Misdemeanant Probation Association


Omar Gamez is a Probation Officer for the City of Edmonds in Edmonds, Washington. He has a Masters in Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Florida. He has 20 years of experience in the field working with at-risk populations. As a previous instructor for the Florida Department of Corrections/Probation & Parole, he was trained in teaching Motivational Interviewing to other professionals within the agency. He now currently teaches Motivational Interviewing to all new Misdemeanant Probation Officers in the Washington State Misdemeanant Probation Academy. He also facilitates SMART Recovery support groups, Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT) and Domestic Violence MRT groups, and DUI and Domestic Violence Impact Panels both in English and Spanish.
