A Probation and Parole Officer's Guide To How Counselors Work With Offenders Who Have Experienced Childhood Trauma

Many offenders have experienced trauma and want or need counseling to help them process and heal from traumatic events. However, how counselors work with offenders who have experienced traumatic remains an issue surrounded by myths, misinformation, and misperceptions. In this workshop, audience members will explore how professional counselors define and conceptualize trauma and how counselors work with offenders in counseling who have experienced trauma. Through guided group discussion and the use of case studies, audience members will explore ways in which the presentation content can be applied to their role and functions as probation and parole officers.

SESSION PRESENTERS

Dr. Rochelle Cade
Associate Professor, Sam Houston State University


Dr. Rochelle Cade is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor whose clinical work is predominately in correctional settings. Dr. Cade is an active member of the ACA, including two divisions, the International Association of Addictions (IAAOC) and Offender Counselors and the Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling (AARC). In IAAOC, Dr. Cade serves as President-Elect and Associate Editor of the Journal of Addictions and Offender Counseling. She is a member of the editorial board for Counseling Outcome and Research Evaluation in AARC. Dr. Cade serves as Director of the Texas Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling as the Executive Editor of the Journal of Professional Counseling: Practice, Theory & Research, a publication of the TCA.


Jonathan Rea
Licensed Professional Counselor & Doctoral Student, Sam Houston State University


Jonathan Rea, LPC, LCDC, is a psychotherapist who works with adolescents and adults suffering from depression, anxiety, complex trauma, and substance abuse. Jonathan earned my bachelor’s degree from the University of St. Thomas in 2007. He then spent the following ten years working with adolescents who had experienced abandonment, abuse, or neglect by their parents and who were housed in detention facilities throughout the Houston area. Jonathan then earned his Master of Science degree from the University of St. Thomas specializing in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2019. Jonathan offers individual therapy, family therapy, couples counseling, and group therapy. Jonathan's areas of expertise include addiction, family-of-origin work, trauma, and relationship concerns.
