Workshop Description: This presentation will be presented by probation officers from various tribes and pueblos that have participated in the Tribal Probation Academy presented by APPA. During a Q&A style forum the panel will present questions that were presented during our training at Tribal Probation Academy thereby illustrating how we continue to collaboratively work together and utilize our network through social media, professional forums and personal contact to create a community of resources we can contribute to and benefit from in our professional roles in probation and parole.. By working together and reaching out we are sharing and increasing our tools and resources. The creation of this network enables us to bridge the gaps of resources and support that is common in Native communities.

SESSION PRESENTERS
Crystal Gonzales
DV Probation Officer, Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council, Inc


Crystal Gonzales- I have been a probation officer with ENIPC for about 18 months. My program focuses primarily on domestic violence. I am the probation officer in 8 different pueblos. I have completed the Tribal Probation Academy in December 2018. I have a degree in Criminal Justice. I am passionate about what I do and am eager to share my passion with others. Ricardo Hernandez – I’m been working for the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony for the last 18 months as the Truancy Officer. I got the certification of the Tribal Probation Academy on December of 2018. I am behavior Specialist in the field of youth/adolescent, I have a Social Work Degree and minors on Psychology and Substance Abuse. My areas of focus are leadership, communication and self-awareness on Native Youth. I am passionate to work and deliver the proper skills to the youth and adults that pass my path of life.

Tarena Valdez
Lead Probation Officer, Mescalero Apache Tribal Court


Tarena Valdez- I have been a Probation Officer for about 6 years. My focus is trying to help my community members who come through my office better their lives either by getting them into treatment, getting a job/school, I am very passionate about my job and want to help my community. I have completed Tribal Probation Academy in April 2015, and have completed Tribal Probation Academy in December 2018, by utilizing the peers from both trainings I have been able to reach out to them and share what resources we have, call one of them up and ask for help when needed.
