Navigating the Challenges and Benefits of Providing Pretrial Services within a Probation Department

Community Supervision is ever evolving; accordingly, organizations need to adapt. With a push toward bail reform, jurisdictions may need to create a stand-alone pretrial agency and/or repurpose established probation officers. This workshop will focus on the changed mindset that is needed for probation officers who do not have experience working with defendants that have not been convicted and may still have all their rights. This session will discuss the differences between, probation and pretrial clients, officer mindsets between the two groups, and what to do if you have to wear both hats. Participants will be provided with tips to help breakdown the mental barriers that may limit a pretrial officer’s efficacy and illustrate how by building trust between themselves and their defendants they can provide legal and effective supervision and encourage pretrial success. Participants will understand how a robust pretrial program can foster hope for pretrial defendants, and the community.
