Did You Say What They Heard? Informed Communication Styles for Effective Case Work

Knowing how to communicate is just as important as knowing what to communicate. There are countless diagnostic and assessment tools used in casework that identify strengths needs and responsivity. Consequently, there is an abundance of well-defined reports that identify what information needs to be communicated to our clients. However, there is an amazing lack of insight or guidance on how that information is best presented shared or communicated with clients. In this workshop students will be taught elements of Evident Change’s CAIS assessment which identifies and teaches clinicians communication strategies tailored to the client’s individual communication style. Through scripted and free style roleplaying, during the workshop, students will discover that there is often more value, in terms of client success, in how you communicate than what you say.

Katie Meyer
CAIS/JAIS Program Manager, Evident Change
Katie Meyer: became CAIS/JAIS program manager in 2021 after joining Evident Change as a program associate in 2012.Throughout her decade at Evident Change, Katie has helped probation agencies across the country shift the paradigm towards client-centered, collaborative case planning and has seen the successes such individualized approaches have had within these departments. Working to incorporate “what’s next” once risk/needs assessments are completed is her passion!
Jeff Morino
Program Associate III, Evident Change
Jeff Morino: is a retired Deputy Chief Probation Officer from the San Mateo County Probation Department, who currently works as a Program Associate with Evident Change. Mr. Morino has an extensive history as an effective teacher and trainer. He is certified as an instructor of the National Curriculum and Training Institute’s Cognitive Behavioral Change Courses and as a result of his extensive knowledge of cognitive therapy instruction, Mr. Morino has advised multiple community based organizations as they convert their treatment programs to evidence based cognitive therapy curriculums.
Simone Sawyer
JAIS/CAIS Program Associate, Evident Change
Simone Sawyer is part of the Evident Change CAIS/JAIS team. She previously worked as the outreach and engagement specialist for Texas Health and Human Services' Youth Empowerment Services Waiver. Prior to this, she served a year as an AmeriCorps Volunteer for the Texas Juvenile Justice Department and the University of Texas at Austin's Annette Strauss Institute. Simone also has experience working as a juvenile supervision officer in a trauma-informed juvenile detention facility. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice from Huston-Tillotson University, Austin, Texas.
