Despite the nation’s labor shortage, people with justice-system involvement often have difficulty finding employment opportunities with the potential for career advancement. Join this interactive panel discussion focused on how community corrections can establish relationships with employers to encourage fair chance hiring and advancement opportunities for clients. Learn from the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation and Louisiana Parole Project about sectors that are hiring and how to connect clients to opportunities in your community. Come prepared to share what is working for you in helping people tap into good jobs and ways to connect the employment and APPA community in the future. The panel will also feature subject matter experts from the US Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, and the Vera Institute of Justice.

Hon. Karen Friedman
Director for Criminal Justice Innovation and Development Engagement, Bureau Justice of Assistance US Dept of Justice
In February 2022, the Honorable Karen Friedman joined BJA as a political appointee serving as the Director for Criminal Justice Innovation and Development Engagement for the US Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). After serving 20 years as a Judge in the state of Maryland court system, she brings a wealth of experience and commitment to the criminal justice system and has been a major contributor to BJA’s Corrections, Reentry, and Justice Reform portfolio.
Kelly Garrett
Deputy Director, Client Services, Louisiana Parole Project
Kelly Garrett is Deputy Director, Client Services with Louisiana Parole Project, providing full transitional support and reentry services to newly released justice-impacted people. She and her staff assist men and women successfully rebuild their lives after decades of incarceration.
Patricia Gill
Director of Workforce Development, National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation
Patricia Gill is the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation’s Workforce Development Director. She leads the strategy, investment, and implementation of programs preparing disengaged populations for workforce entry and advancement; connecting justice-involved individuals to credentials and career pathways; and supporting individuals through the Restaurant Ready Work-Readiness Network.
Amanda Nowak
Senior Program Associate, Vera Institute of Justice
Amanda Nowak is a Senior Program Associate at the Vera Institute of Justice committed to improving reentry education and employment opportunities for justice-impacted people. She works closely with the U.S. Bureau of Justice Assistance to deliver technical assistance, events, and programs that facilitate sustainable pathways to fair chance employment.
