Transgender 101

SESSION INFO

Tuesday, January 7, 2020
4:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Session Type: Workshop

This facilitated workshop is intended to assist parole and probation agents in interacting, respecting, and accepting transgender clients. It is imperative that Agents understand the unique needs and have the cultural competence to treat this population as they wish to be treated. These skills are necessary for us to effectively provide clients with the resources and assistance needed to become and remain productive and reduce rates of recidivism. Further, this workshop will provide current and useful information to parole and probation agents regarding the safe and respectful treatment of transgender offenders by providing academic, cultural, and legal viewpoints of the issues that make this group distinctive. We will discuss intake procedures, classification, placement and housing, medical and mental health care and treatment, suicide prevention, potential victimization, policy development, staff and offender education, for supervision in the community. Participants will engage in role playing and other interactive techniques.
