This workshop will describe the development and implementation of an overdose death review team within the Department of Corrections in the State of Wisconsin. In addition this workshop will provide practical information regarding current identified gaps identified in the state of Wisconsin during overdose death reviews and the response to fill those gaps.

SESSION PRESENTERS

Nicole Hafemann
Treatment Specialist, WI Department of Corrections


Nicole Hafemann began working for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections in 1997 as a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Social Worker at Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution, working with men with less than 6th grade reading levels. Over her career with the Department, Nicole also worked as a general population Social Worker, intake Social Worker and restrictive housing Social Worker at Kettle Moraine Correctional Institution, Probation and Parole Agent with the Division of Community Corrections (DCC) and has been in her current position of a Treatment Specialist with the new Treatment Unit for the Division of Community Corrections since November 2021. While working in the institution, Nicole facilitated Substance Use Disorder groups, Domestic Violence Groups and Cognitive Behavioral groups with individuals. She has worked closely with the University of Cincinnati Corrections Institute and Wisconsin Department of Corrections staff developing Domestic Violence/Thinking for a Change curriculum for the Department. In her current role, Nicole is working cross divisionally on committees addressing Opioid Initiatives as well as developing Domestic Violence Program Standards for the Department, piloting an evidenced-based Domestic Violence Assessment tool, and has assisted with development of the new Treatment Unit for DCC. Nicole received a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. She is a Certified Social Worker and licensed Substance Abuse Counselor.


Holly Stanelle
DCC Clinical Supervisor, WI Department of Corrections


Holly Stanelle began working for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections in 2008 as a Treatment Specialist 1 in the Mental Illness Chemical Abuse (MICA) Program at Oshkosh Correctional Institution. Over her career with the Department, Holly has also worked as a Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Social Worker at the Drug Abuse Correctional Center, a Treatment Specialist 2 in the Office of Program Services for the Division of Adult Institutions (DAI), and has been in her current role as the Clinical Supervisor and Manager of the new Treatment Unit for the Division of Community Corrections (DCC) since April of 2021. In Holly’s many roles she has worked cross divisionally on several committees helping to roll out and implement department wide initiatives. Holly has also played a key role in DAI’s SUD treatment programs, providing clinical supervision as well as facilitating the design of evidenced-based treatment programming throughout the state. In her current position, Holly has developed an evidenced-based Treatment Unit for the Division of Community Corrections, has worked on many opioid related initiatives, and is the chair of the WI Department of Corrections Opioid Advisory Team. Holly holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, with a minor in Religious Studies. She is a Certified Social Worker, a Clinical Substance Abuse Counselor, and an Independent Clinical Supervisor.
