This workshop is designed to take a brief look at the 2021 SAFE-T ACT and what role officers will and should be in creating real and lasting change among the population we serve. The 2021 SAFE-T ACT works at addressing the policies that can negatively affect the outcome all the individuals passing through the criminal justice system. In this workshop I will address the human relations aspect of the job we do every day. We will take a look at what some of the key issues needed to be addressed for successful reform and reentry. Issues like; housing insecurity, employment, community and family support systems (or the lack thereof).

SESSION PRESENTERS

Christiane Williams
Agent/Mental Health Liaison, MS Department of Corrections


Christiane Williams has been in Law Enforcement/Corrections for 25 years. She has extensive training in all aspects of law enforcement/corrections. She is a certified Law Enforcement with an Educational background in Criminal Justice. She is active in the Behavioral Health Community (Law Enforcement/Corrections), a Certified Mental Health First Aid, Public Safety, Adult and Youth, a certified State Instructor Mississippi Board of Standards and Training for Law Enforcement, Crisis Intervention and Trauma Informed Instructor. In the last 15 years she has been very active in the Mental Health Community assisting persons with Mental Illness get the help needed when they become a part of the Criminal Justice System. She is involved in various Community Organization involving Adults and Youth, serving as President and or a Board Member for many organizations such as NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and Hinds Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention Taskforce. She was recently selected to be a part of a National Best Practice Workgroup in Corrections that derived from her involvement at the America Probation and Parole Association Training Institutes a newly elected member of the national board. Christiane currently works as an Agent with the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
