Three years after its inception, EXiT: Executives transforming probation and parole has been at the forefront of advocating for probation and parole to be smaller, less punitive, and more hopeful, equitable and restorative. This workshop will provide an overview of the twelve foundational EXiT policy aims and examples of how former and current probation and parole leaders have worked in their jurisdictions to achieve these policy aims. Presenters will provide attendees with strategies and potential avenues for leadership, policy and partnership to transform their probation/ parole agencies.

SESSION PRESENTERS

Norris Henderson
Executive Director of Voice Experience, Executives Transforming Probation and Parole Network


Norris Henderson is a former Soros Justice Fellow, who has had tremendous success in his work impacting public policy and discourse about police accountability, public defense for poor and working-class people, and reforming the notorious Orleans Parish Prison (OPP). As someone who was wrongfully incarcerated for 27 years followed by a probation term, Norris has firsthand experiences of the racism and brutality of the criminal justice system. He uses these experiences to address the needs of communities of color across Louisiana and beyond.


Dr. Brian Lovins
Principal, Justice System Partners


Dr. Lovins earned his PhD in Criminology from the University of Cincinnati. He is currently president-elect for the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA). Prior to JSP, Dr. Lovins worked for Harris County CSCD as the assistant director. He was tasked with developing and implementing agency wide change plans to drive increased successful completion rates. In addition, he was the associate director for the University of Cincinnati's Corrections Institute, the School of Criminal Justice's training and research department. He has developed a state-wide juvenile risk assessment (Ohio Youth Assessment System: OYAS) and adult risk assessment (Ohio Risk Assessment System: ORAS), as well as validation of a series of pretrial risk assessments. Dr. Lovins has been invited to present to over 200 agencies and routinely delivers trainings on the principles of effective intervention, risk assessment, and the delivery of cognitive-behavioral interventions.
