Motivational Interviewing in Practice

This interactive session will spend time on skill enhancing motivational interviewing practice. Throughout this training participants will build competency at applying Open Questions, Affirmation, Reflection and Summaries (OARS) in the spirit of MI. Participants will receive brief instructions followed by opportunities to practice with a coach. This training can serve as a booster for people who want more MI practice, or introduction for people who have not used MI before. The coach will adjust to different skill levels. Participants receive real time feedback in an enjoyable environment, as they respond to realistic statements from Justice Involved Individuals. Participants will leave energized and equipped with new ideas and responses to respond to Justice Involved Individuals.

SESSION PRESENTERS

R. Jason Nespeca
Parole Regional Supervisor, OH Department of Rehabilitation and Correction


R. Jason Nespeca is a Parole Services Regional Supervisor, servicing Summit County and surrounding areas. He is a Motivational Interviewing coach, who has conducted several MI trainings and was instrumental in the development of MI trainings currently used in Ohio. He received his B.A in Applied Science from Youngstown State University in 2001. He was a Parole Officer from 2004, until becoming a Parole Services Supervisor in 2012. Previously, he worked as a Case Manager and Probation Officer with the Community Corrections Association.


Joseph Suciu
Parole Program Specialist, OH Department of Rehabilitation and Correction


Joseph Suciu is a Parole Program Specialist for the Ohio Adult Parole Authority and currently coordinates grant projects, where he is instrumental in development of updated Evidence Practice trainings and applications. With over 20 years of experience as a Motivational Interviewing trainer, he has developed multiple MI training curricula for criminal justice professionals. He has trained extensively on evidence-based practice. His trainer certifications include Ohio Risk Assessment Systems, Level of Service Inventory, Thinking for a Change Facilitator, Decision Points Facilitator, Core Correctional Practices. He obtained a Master of Science from the University of Cincinnati in Criminal Justice.
