Did You Know?

One of many initiatives of APPA, the Leadership Institute is a year-long intensive opportunity for community corrections professionals to grow their abilities, strengths, and knowledge.

In a letter to this year's graduates, the coordinators shared some of the experiences Leadership Institute - Class 8 had in the last twelve months:

"LI8 began in Jan 2022 in Atlanta after an arduous and inclusive selection process by the APPA team. You learned about the history of the LI, the inspiration behind the development of the institute, & the impact it can have on current and emerging leaders. Amir Ghannad discussed his book The Transformative Leader. Aaron O’Connell administered Real Colors. We heard from Marcus Hodges about Leadership v. Management in a panel comprised of Dr. Greg Dillon, Crystal Moon, Albert Banuelos, & Marcus Hodges to discuss implicit bias. You were paired with your mentors based on identified areas of growth. In August of 2022 we went to Chicago, and for the first time, LI went off-site. Dr. Miquel Lewis of Cook County Juvenile Probation/Court Services invited us to the Chicago Justice Gallery and spoke about his powerful leadership journey. We heard from Dr. Suttle about Leadership During Uncertain Times, Dr. Alex Walker about Finding Comfort/Embracing your Role as a Leader of Change, Chief Jennifer Brady about Finding Passion and Purpose and Leading Teams, and Jude David presented The Takeover: Millennials vs. Everybody as well as an engaging debate. Between Atlanta and Chicago you worked on your Able 360 Process project, met with your mentors, and attended LI virtual meetings with the coordinators and had a debriefing with Amir Ghannad. Between Chicago and LA, you completed your LI projects based on an identified need in your agencies. In LA, you presented your inspiring and authentic projects and traveled to LA County’s newest juvenile facility, Campus Kilpatrick."
